We would like to invite you to the opening of the 11th edition of the SURVIVAL Art Review. This year’s programme includes debates, Sound Art Forum and artworks in special locations. The Festival Club will become another attraction.
40 artworks will be shown during the Review, among them installations, interventions in the environment, videos and performances. The motto of this year’s edition is ‘We’re Sailing’, so SURVIVAL 11 is dedicated to the presence of a river in cityscape. It is an opportunity to artistically interpret the role and meaning of the Oder in the lives of the inhabitants of Wrocław. Thus several of the installations will be presented directly on the water surface to enable watching them during boat cruises on the Oder. All the works can be seen individually, using the map available at the Festival Bureau, or during curators’ tours run by Michał Bieniek and Anna Kołodziejczyk (Saturday and Sunday at 12 and 5 p.m., and one tour in English – on Saturday at 3 p.m.).
After the vernissage, a special performance titled ‘The Marked Place’ will take place, which will consist of live mixing of sound and image. During the concert, Wojtek Pukocz will edit on special screens bits of videos and photos which use the motive of water. Michał Sikorski, Kasper Minciel and Grzegorz Szustak will provide synchronised background music and images created by instruments and a mixer.
Throughout the duration of the Review, a series of videos selected by Małgorzata Sobolewska will be shown on the first floor of the Academy of Fine Arts. DOUBLE DREAM combines works whose main subject is water in its many forms: rain, ocean, sea.
On Saturday and Sunday there will be debates and Sound Art Forum events. This year’s debates will not only concern water, but some of them will be held on a boat. Particularly interesting will be a two-hour cruise under the title ‘On the RIVER’, during which philosophical and culture-related threads will be woven. Moreover the programme includes a discussion with a Catalan living on a mobile boathouse, a presentation of photographs by Mikołaj Nowacki, which have also been shown in New York, and a discussion about the 1997 flood. We will also think about the changes by the Oder and in the Nadodrze district, and listen to and talk about the city audioscape. Later in the week there will be art interventions and performances in interesting venues, such as the Morskie Oko bathing beach or the ‘Black Stream’ pond.
The organisers will also provide a feast for the stomach. The SURVIVAL Festival Club will be located next to Kafe Szalet. From 21 to 30 June, from 12 to 8 p.m., you will have an opportunity to discuss art, take your free map of the Review, take a sunbath, sit in vintage furniture provided by RebelMebel, have a cup of coffee from Taho Cafe, taste grilled meals in Kafe Szalet, and on the 22 and 23 June – enjoy delicious dishes prepared by the authors of the Jedzenie Do Rzeczy blog.
