Open call for the artistic residencies in Poland and Tanzania

The ART TRANSPARENT Foundation (Wrocław, Poland) and Nafasi Art Space (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) are pleased to announce a call for artists.

We are pleased to inform an open call for the artistic residencies in Poland and Tanzania is closed. We got 142 submissions (48 from Europe and 94 from Africa). Results of the call for artists will be announce in the end of September.

Call for artist organised in cooperation of the ART TRANSPARENT Foundation (Wrocław, Poland) and Nafasi Art Space (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) is a part of the project “Deconfining Arts, Culture and Politics in Europe and Africa”.

As part of the project “Deconfining Arts, Culture and Politics in Europe and Africa”, the ART TRANSPARENT Foundation (Wrocław, Poland) and Nafasi Art Space (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) are pleased to announce a call for artists. We are looking for artists working with video art to participate in research residencies and to develop new moving image works.

DECONFINING is a four-year EU-funded project bringing together cultural practitioners, artists, policy makers, and audiences from two continents – Europe and Africa. Dedicated to contributing to a better understanding of (social, political and economic) confinement patterns from different viewpoints, the project aims to explore and develop new ways of intercontinental artistic and cultural (policy) cooperation and provide better access and information for intercontinental mobility and co-creation. ART TRANSPARENT and Nafasi Art Center are inviting applications from artists to take part in the project Deconfining. Our cooperation aims at fostering relations between artists and cultural professionals in our regions through residencies, production of new moving image works and their presentation and dissemination in the partner countries. We are looking for artists working with the moving image (for example, video, animation, film, digital and found footage, etc) who are willing to develop a new artwork within the framework and parameters of this project.

For whom:

    • Artists working with moving image with documented artistic experience (works, exhibitions, projects, etc)

    • Coming from or based in Czechia, Hungary, Kenya, Poland, Rwanda, Slovakia, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia

    • Artists with working knowledge of English

What do we offer:

    • research residency in Tanzania for artists coming from Europe (1-2 week long)

    • Research residency in Poland for artists coming from Africa (1-2 week long)

    • Connection with experts in the chosen field of research

    • Chances to meet the partners’ artistic community through networking events and presentations

    • Production budget for creation of a new moving image work

    • Presentation of the work in Wroclaw and Dar es Salaam

What do we require:

    • availability to travel for research residencies (artists from Europe to Tanzania in January 2024; artists from Africa to Poland in June 2024)

    • Capacity to create a moving image work according to the agreed upon timeline

    • Proven experience

    • The working language of the project is English so communicative knowledge of this language is necessary. (The moving image works can be created in participants’ languages.)

We are pleased to announce the results of the selection process for the “Deconfining Arts, Culture and Politics in Europe and Africa” project’s artist residencies in Poland and Tanzania for the year 2024!

The ART TRANSPARENT Foundation (Wrocław) and Nafasi Art Space (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) are delighted to reveal the names of six individuals who will soon be visiting these respective countries, participating in research residencies, and creating new works in the field of video art.

The outcomes of their work will be showcased in upcoming editions of the SURVIVAL Art Review.

Naitiemu Nyanjom is a Kenyan material, production and performance artist, with a background in civil engineering. Her practice focuses on finding her identity as an individual connected with community and nature; guided by the African Philosophy of Ubuntu.

She explores diverse materials and processes, telling emotional stories on female energy, culture and mental health awareness. She uses experimental audio visual installations, upcycling waste, videos and other tech to enhance story-telling. She has been privileged to document stories from the indigenous Maasai community of Twala Tenebo Women village exploring their history and culture through photography and video interviews, 3d scans & VR, and a reimagined future through performance art, with a team of 13 other female creatives, where Naitiemu was the lead artist.

She is currently working with the indigenous Maasai community of Chumvi region, in a project of reconnecting with indigenous trees, planting them with children and learning more about their medicinal and cultural significance. She is the festival lead at Nairobi Design, curating and coordinating production of exhibits and experiences. Nairobi Design Week 2024, the 9th edition, will take place from March 9th-17th at Opportunity Factory, Nairobi, themed ‘We Got This.’

Michalina Musielak is a Polish visual anthropologist, researcher and artist, currently a PhD candidate at the Centre for Research on Social Memory at the University of Warsaw and ‘Meisterschülerin’ at HGB Leipzig. Her research engages with architecture and the memory of the 20th century which she narrates in documentary forms and curatorial projects.


Jan Moss is a film director, DJ, activist, promotor, and an intermedia artist who mainly uses film, sculpture and sound. He is interested in the origin of dreams and ambitions, sustainable development, the cycles of self-regulation of nature, or the role of the sublime in conditioning social needs, e.g. the commodification of the experience of fear in nineteenth-century horror literature, i.e. the relation between the fog and the smog. He studied fine arts at the academies in Krakow, Oslo, and Malmö. Since 2018 he’s been closely collaborating with the Ugandan record label Nyege Nyege Tapes, creating music videos and a series of documentary films Nyege Nyege Tapes Tapes.

He worked as a content consultant or creator in projects for documenta13 in Athens and Kassel, Film Study Center at Harvard University, Mies van Der Rohe Pavillion in Barcelona, Jeu de Paume Museum in Paris, the Lithuanian Pavillion for 16th Architecture Biennale in Venice. Selected solo exhibitions include: Project Room, Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw (2019), Handbook for city dwellers, Krakow (2017), Noplace, Oslo (2017), Hotel Pro Forma, Copenhagen (2016) and group exhibitions: Ghetto Biennale, Port-au-Prince (2018), Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2016), Futura, Prague (2015), National Gallery, Ulan Bator (2014).

Teflon’ Kizza Moses is a result-driven, quality-conscious creative visual artist and a filmmaker with over 8 years of hands-on experience. He is the Director and Founder of Teflon Films, a boutique Visual production house which strives to produce exceptional narrative films, Commercials, corporate Videos and films.

He has worked on a number of projects such as GAME CHANGER PROGRAM for International Sports Alliance, CLIMATE CHAMPIONS for USAID, WE PLAY FOR PEACE among others. He is currently working as a D.o.P on two of Uganda’s biggest Television Series for MNET/DSTV Africa. (PRESTIGE AND SUUBI Tv series).

Lindi Dedek (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Prague and Berlin. Lindi studied film production and scriptwriting at FAMU in Prague and Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg as well as physical theater at Ecole Philippe Gaulier in France. They hold an MA in Gender Studies from Charles University in Prague, where they focused on arts-based research. The short film “Black and White”, which Lindi co-created with the collective ZLA Films, won the Tribeca Film Institute If/Then Award and has been screened at more than 50 film festivals. In 2019, Lindi has curated an exhibition about environmental topics in West Africa for Credi-ONG in South Benin as a part of GLEN Network

Lindi’s fictional writing has been published in Aji Magazine, Stadtsprachen, Tint Journal, Lost Boy Press and others. They curate the short film selection of the German-Polish-Czech Neisse Film Festival. As a performer, they have been part of various productions in Germany, France and the USA such as the NY Renaissance Festival, Manifestival and Sicaida.

Josephine ‘Kia’ Kiaga is a freelance Film Producer, Festival Consultant and Editor who is a Co-Owner of Kiagraphy Media Ltd. She is currently running her Dar Es Salaam based company remotely as she focuses on developing her career as an editor and media consultant. When she is not writing poetry, she is teaching students aged 11+ the art of filming making and assisting them to create their own masterpieces! She believes her driving force to be a filmmaker and artist is ultimately being a vessel for more Tanzanian women to work in the professional film industry and have their stories told in their most authentic form.
