The kinetic sculpture by the artistic-scientific duo Alicja Patanowska and Marcin Sawiński is actually an industrial printer without the casing, approximately 1 meter high. The device prints out corrections of fake news, searched on an ongoing basis on the Internet by a specially programmed computer, right in front of the viewer’s eyes.
Showing the inside of the printing mechanism is intentional – the elusive and unpredictable web is made real by the machine that translates digital fluidity into tangible writing on paper. In this way, fake news, sanctioned by the specific properties of virtual media, is no longer elusive; its volatility and its truth-untruth potential are replaced by the reality of a fact that has been scientifically verified.
It is said that the main tool in fighting fake news is building public awareness and critical thinking. However, it is worth emphasising the role of experts in this process. In the world of modern technology, politics and large social and economic structures, we are no longer able to function fully responsibly without trusted guides – journalists and, more recently, fact-checkers – who have the knowledge and competences necessary to guide us through the daily deluge of often contradictory information.
By combining the language of art, capable of affecting the imagination, with scientific and technological tools, Fake News Archive tries to indicate a possible starting point for rebuilding mutual social trust and creating awareness about the mechanisms of media untruth. After all, as the artists emphasise, “fake news can only live when you share it.”

Alicja Patanowska – a potter. Artist and designer. Her answer to the ever increasing chaos of consumption is an audience’s personal involvement in the creation of the artifact. Winner of prestigious awards, incl. Mazda Design Award 2018, Młoda Polska 2018, British Glass Biennale 2015. Graduate of the Royal College of Art (2014). She has participated in over 100 international exhibitions, and her products can be bought in places such as the Shanghai Museum of Glass and TATE Modern in London.
Marcin Sawiński – he deals with engineering and data analysis. For several years, he has been cooperating with the University of Economics in Poznań, conducting research projects in the field of data science. Particularly interested in applying modern technologies to protect common goods and non-profit activities.
