How was the mural created?
The creation process was exceptional — the idea was born out of discussions and consultations with the residents of Brochów. A team of three community commissioners (Arleta Gosławska, Małgorzata “Gosza” Tutko, and Hubert Sulima) selected the final design through an open competition organized by Art Transparent.
Out of three artistic proposals, local residents chose Four Seasons of the Block as the project that best reflected their expectations. The alternative proposals included:
-
the creation of a Brochów community cookbook
-
and a series of workshops resulting in a comic book about the contemporary history of Brochów
Author and Muralist
The mural was designed and painted by Filip “Skont” Niziołek, an experienced artist known for his large-format portraits. His work, often non-commercial, contributes significantly to promoting a positive image of Wrocław.
On the mural at 1 Koreańska Street, the artist portrayed residents of the building, whose stories he got to know during the project.
What does the mural depict?
Four Seasons of the Block is a portrait of the Brochów community, inspired by meetings and conversations with its residents.
It features people the artist personally met, and the piece invites reflection on empathy and human connection.
Comments from the Artistic Commissioners
The commissioners emphasized that the mural stood out for its boldness and uncompromising vision, with the greatest potential to impact the neighborhood. They appreciated the artist’s social sensitivity, ability to build relationships, and talent for breaking down barriers.
The Social Dimension of the Project
The mural was painted on the walls of a social housing complex, home to residents who often face social exclusion.
Skont’s work restored visibility and dignity to the people portrayed, showing their stories in a new and respectful light.
Thanks to the involvement of local organizations such as CAL Made in Brochów and the Brochów Friends Association, community consultations were held — a key part of the selection process.
International Project “DemArt”
The mural was made possible through the international project “Community Art Commissioning in Local Public Space (DemArt)”, co-financed by the European Union, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and the Self-Government of Lower Silesia.
Thanks to this initiative, art became a bridge connecting the diverse communities of Brochów.
