On 12 September, as part of the programme of the 2026 Gdańsk Book Fair, a presentation of the project “The Book of Dreaming: How Listening to Children Can Help Us Change the World” took place. The event formed part of the programme accompanying the presence of Lviv, the Guest of Honour of this year’s edition of the fair.
The Book of Dreaming is an international artistic initiative that uses work with children and book-making as tools to support integration, social inclusion, and positive transformations of urban space. During the meeting, the speakers presented the main ideas behind the project, examples of practices based on attentive listening to children, and the importance of children’s voices in building more open and welcoming communities.
An important aspect of the project is also the exchange of experience among people working in the cultural sector, as well as the public presentation of the books-as-artifacts created as part of the initiative. The discussion showed that incorporating children’s perspectives into artistic and social activities can become an important impulse for rethinking the city, culture, and relationships among its residents.
The project was presented by Magdalena Basak – a cultural studies specialist, curator, and expert in art communication and artistic events – and Mariana Zagoruiko – a cultural studies specialist, cultural project manager, and head of the Lviv – UNESCO City of Literature office.
