Highlights:
→ The Wrocław Group – An Overlooked Pillar of Local Identity
There is insufficient social and institutional awareness in Wrocław regarding the existence and function of the Wrocław Group, or the significance of its contribution to the city’s cultural identity.
→ The Toruń Group – A Case of Realized Potential
An example was presented of the city hall in Toruń, where both permanent and temporary exhibitions highlight works by members of the Toruń Group. In contrast, Wrocław’s institutions often focus more on the Kraków School than their own local Wrocław artists.
→ Public Art – A Neglected Treasure of Wrocław
Participants noted the ongoing neglect of public art in Wrocław – both existing works and future projects receive insufficient attention and investment. This includes not only contemporary works but also those by local classics, such as Janina Szczypczyńska’s outdoor sculptures or globally recognized ceramicist Anna Malicka-Zamorska. Regular conservation of works by artists like Stanisław Dróżdż or Barbara Kozłowska also poses challenges for city authorities.
→ Lack of Expert Cultural Policy in the Visual Arts in Wrocław
The conversation highlighted the absence of a consistent cultural policy for visual art in public space. This may stem from the lack of a dedicated city body composed of experienced experts to guide such policies, ensuring quality and aligning them with Wrocław’s character and identity.
