The conversation between Renata Bonter and Lidia Kupczyńska-Jankowiak revolves around three main themes: the history of Wrocław ceramics, cooperation with industry, and today’s education/profession of ceramic artists.
Through this conversation, you will learn:
- where the “Wrocław School of Ceramics” came from,
- what cooperation with industry looked like,
- how the economic transformation affected the profession of ceramicists,
- what it means to educate ceramic artists today,
- how the role of the designer and the model of their work have changed,
- the importance of identity, locality, and sustainable approaches to materials in ceramics,
- what contemporary education looks like—between tradition and new technology,
- where ceramicists work after graduation.
The conversation took place on October 11, 2025, during a popular-science forum from the series “15% Abstraction”, organized by the Art Transparent Foundation. This year, the focus was on the social, productive, and affective dimensions of women’s artistic work, with particular attention to sculptors, ceramicists, and designers from Lower Silesia.
The forum “The Blank Spots Are… – Postwar Women Sculptors and Ceramicists of Wrocław” served as an open space to collect scattered materials and stories about the biographies and works of Wrocław sculptors and ceramicists, including Janina Szczypczyńska, Regina Konieczka, and the Skomorowska sisters. Four conversations and a lecture were held, exploring not only the historical contexts of these artists’ lives but also their legacies and influence on the art of subsequent generations.
