Let us unite and come together, let all of us unite.
Summer came completely today.
And wherever we go, let us all unite,
on this joyful May morning.
“Summer Came Completely Today” was a seven-day performative intervention in public space by Liliana Zeic, created as part of the project ARTIFAKE: ART INVADES PROPAGANDA, produced by the Art Transparent Foundation.
At the center of the piece was the transformation of Wrocław’s Iglica monument into a peculiar Maypole, serving as the axis of a series of rituals dedicated to women and non-binary individuals who have been affected by fake news, deliberate disinformation, and propaganda. Reimagined as an axis mundi—a symbolic world axis connecting the earthly and the divine—Iglica became the central point of these rituals, performed from various locations across Europe and focused on specific individuals.
Functioning as a transmitter, the monument symbolically emitted care and tenderness toward those harmed by media falsehoods. Each day at sunset, the artist performed a ritual and connected with guest artists offering home intentions—creative responses dedicated to people harmed by lies. Drawing on pre-Christian rites and animist traditions from across Europe, Zeic wove a new chapter into the layered history of the Iglica, once adorned with flags proclaiming freedom and the struggle for human rights.
Where traditional maypoles signaled the start of harvest season, the ironic title Summer Came Completely Today points instead to informational and environmental overheat. Zeic merged the symbolic language of the maypole with true stories of people, performing rituals that transmitted both radical care and digital data. The intentions—expressed through dance, song, breath, poetry, or incense—emphasized the healing potential of mindful connection, especially for those who have suffered from anonymous and widespread slander.
First, one must choose the object of the ritual. The object is a lie.
Then, choose the ritual’s agent. The agent is Iglica.
And finally, sing a song, so that it may be remembered forever.
