Open Art Methodology. Toolbox

In this publication, we present detailed methodological guidelines for local organizations and community members to help them successfully implement artistic projects. You will learn about the objectives of the DemArt project and our reflections. Through these insights, you will discover how to combine art with democratic action to achieve lasting effects. We invite you to explore the potential of creativity as a force capable of transforming society and to reflect on the role of art in shaping our shared future.

Have you ever thought about commissioning a work of art for your community?

In a world of increasing social polarization and the erosion of democratic values, the DemArt project seeks to be a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change. By merging the power of artistic expression with democratic principles, this innovative initiative enables individuals and communities to confront the most pressing social challenges. At its core lies the belief in the unifying and transformative potential of art, which, through creativity, dialogue, and collaboration, fosters integration, deepens understanding, and inspires action.

Where to start? What steps should you take to successfully commission a work of art for your community? This guide will walk you through the entire process—from A to Z.

Commissioning art on behalf of a community is a complex challenge that requires collaboration between multiple organizations, artists, and residents. An open, transparent, and participatory process can bring significant benefits but also comes with numerous challenges.

The methodology developed within the DemArt project aims to provide practical guidelines for local organizations and community members, allowing them to effectively replicate proven solutions. The guidelines in this document are written in an accessible way to facilitate their application. We offer a detailed step-by-step guide covering all stages of project implementation. Each phase follows the same structure: description, recommendations, potential pitfalls, and practical tips.

International Institute of Community Commissioned Art

Initiated by Bethlen Square Theater in collaboration with partners from various countries, the DemArt project bridges the gap between a new approach to culture and active democratic engagement. Thanks to the contributions of many talented individuals—artists, cultural managers, local government representatives, and residents—safe spaces are created where diverse voices can be heard, inspire one another, and collectively address complex issues affecting their communities. From workshops and public art installations to storytelling-based narratives, DemArt employs a wide range of creative tools to develop critical thinking and empower communities.

The program places particular emphasis on reaching marginalized and underrepresented groups, giving them the opportunity to share their perspectives and experiences. The project’s goal is not only to stimulate individual growth but also to foster a collective sense of responsibility for creating a just and inclusive society. This approach aligns with a vision of democracy rooted in culture, where active participation and shared experiences form the foundation for positive social change.

The DemArt project (Democratising Art Commissioning by Involving Local Communities) is funded by the European Commission’s Creative Europe program and is implemented between 2023 and 2025 by the Hungarian organizations Bethlen Square Theater and Pro Progressione, the Polish Art Transparent Foundation, and the Latvian New Theatre Institute of Latvia.
